The Feminist Freeschool Film Programme. 17-24th April 2009

VARIOUS SCREENINGS/GUEST PROGRAMMING

Screen Bandita co-curated the film sector of the programme for the Feminist Freeschool Festival that took place in Edinburgh between the 17th- 24th April 2009. The festival's remit was to offer a week of free workshops, discussion spaces, film screenings and music that celebrate and empower women.

There were three diverse and exciting screenings held at the A.C.E Centre in Leith. The screenings aimed to show some politically engaged pieces, work by a range of contemporary underground filmmakers as well as a showcase of two pioneering female practitioners: cultural adventurer Maya Deren and shadow animator Lotte Reineger. Most screenings will also incorporate discussions and / or live music.

Cachin Cachan Cachunga. Tuesday 20th October 2009.
Asked to contribute two short films responding to the theme of freedom of expression to this 'Radical Cabaret' Screen Bandita proffered:
Doll clothes. Cindy Sherman. 1975. Black and white super 8 film transferred to video.
Through the stop- motion animation of 2D paper dolls, Sherman brings into focus issues regarding gender and femininity, and asks, what are the encoded meanings communicated by the clothes we wear?

Marina Ambramovics Balkan erotic epic. 2005.
Performance artist/agitator Ambramovic delves into Balkan folklore to explore the crude, magical and mysterious rites of ethnic fertility and virility.
